FC Milwaukee Nationals United States Soccer Development Academy 2012-2013 U16 and U18 Team Rosters Announced

FC Milwaukee Nationals’ United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) U16 and U18 Team Rosters Announced

Milwaukee, WI -Head Coach Phil Presser and Assistant Coach Jon Coleman have completed the selection of FC Milwaukee Nationals’ 2012-2013 USSDA U16 and U18 teams set to embark on the league’s first 10 month long season.  Pre-season training begins this weekend, at FC Milwaukee Nationals’ soccer fields, in Germantown, WI.

FC Milwaukee Nationals Director of Coaching Peter Knezic said, “Each of these players is to be congratulated first of all, for making our USSDA teams and second of all, for making the commitment to play club soccer year round. Coaches Presser and Coleman made difficult decisions during the selection process and each player certainly should be proud. Of course, being selected is just their first challenge.”

FC Milwaukee’s USSDA teams like many of the clubs’ younger aged teams are comprised of players from communities as far away as Green Bay to the north east, Madison to the west, and Northern Illinois to the south. This season however, each player at the USSDA level has distinguished himself by making the commitment to forego high school soccer to take advantage of the opportunity to play highly competitive club soccer year round for the first time in USSDA history.

The 10 month USSDA club training and match play format represents a major shift in the landscape of developmental opportunities available for highly ambitious high school aged youth soccer players. FC Milwaukee Nationals is the only club in the state providing access to this the nation’s most dedicated individual player developmental environment for under 16 and under 18 boys.

Coach Presser, who is also Assistant Coach for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Men’s Soccer program said, "Jon and I are excited to work with this young group of dedicated players from all over the state of Wisconsin.  We are looking forward to continuing the development of each player and feeding their passion to stay involved in high level soccer for as long as they can."

He added, "We would like to thank each of these players’ former high school coaches and former club team coaches throughout the state of Wisconsin.  Their influence in helping these players make the decision to play year-round with the academy will accelerate their development on the field."

Description of the USSDA’s shift to a 10 month season from US Soccer’s USSDA website:

After receiving overwhelming support from the Development Academy membership, the Academy moved to a schedule in the fall of 2012 that runs from September through June (or July based on postseason play). This creates a format that is similar to those followed by the elite soccer playing nations around the world as the Development Academy and U.S. Soccer continue their goal of closing the performance gap with the top soccer nations.

Moving to a 10-month season allows players to train together three or four times per week and play meaningful games on the weekend nearly year-round. Fewer games and an extended season will allow for the addition of a substantial number of extra training sessions, which are the primary vehicle for player development.

The 10-month season allows for a greater opportunity to institute a style of play and implement a system according to U.S. Soccer's Curriculum as well as build team chemistry. It also gives teams increased opportunities for younger kids in their club to "play up" against older players in both training and matches, thereby accelerating their development.
