Sarah Hegarty Award
The Sarah Hegarty for Soccer Excellence it’s given each year to a male and female U18 player. The inaugural award was given to Sarah it 1997. It was never meant to be a Memorial award. In March of 1996 Sarah was rushed to the emergency room. In March of 1998 after over 50 surgeries and two organ transplants Sarah died. As a player Sarah led her FC Milwaukee team to three state championships. She was consistent member of the ODP State Team. As a freshman at DSHA she led the soccer team in scoring and second place in the WISAA state tournament. As a sophomore she started for the DSHA state championship basketball team. During Sarah’s illness she fought with the same tenacity that she played. In illness Sarah rarely complained and her optimism and enthusiasm for life never waned. It is Sarah’s attributes in life that we hold as the criteria for our highest honor: loyalty, a great player and determination both on and off the field.
